United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) is one of the few old banks in Nigeria which started as UBA plc in 1961. Currently, the UBA we now have is as a result of the merger between the old UBA and former Standard Trust Bank (STB). The new UBA hence kept the name but the new ideals and Chairmanship of the board was by STB.

United Bank for Africa started as early as 1961, just slightly a year after Nigeria's independence from Britain. The new UBA carries the old name but the logo of Standard trust bank.

The merger between these two strong banks was done out of the desire to build a bigger better bank and also to emerge as a very strong competition after the CBN's consolidation exercise headed by Professor Charles Soludo.

It is said that UBA is one of the biggest bank in West Africa with a total asset of more than US$14B (> 1,600,000,000 Naira) and a very large customer base.
UBA now has branches around West Africa and abroad in countries like Nigeria , Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone as well as New York and London.
